Shawn was brought in to run a set of workshops with the client’s analyst to familiarize them with the best practices for information design, Tableau and generating dashboards. Through this, the client wanted to see the value of Tableau.

Through five half-day sessions, Shawn took the analyst through the process of sketching, mocking up, and developing dashboards in Tableau, and exploring the client’s data.

The client was able to see the value (speed, ease of use, insights) of having an interactive data visualization tool like Tableau. The analyst was scheduled afterward for full official Tableau training to become a power user.

Shawn worked with the client’s analyst over five days and took them through the design process. They sifted through the existing data and sketched out the designs on paper, then Shawn created mockups and developed the dashboards in Tableau. This process was repeated when the first set of dashboards were completed ahead of schedule.

Shawn developed a total of seven dashboards in Tableau, three of which were done ahead of schedule and faster than expected (including an executive summary, Blue Box tonnage, material breakdown.) With the remaining time, more data was explored and dashboards were created for recycling program participants, program participation by geographical distribution, tires tonnage, and tires breakdown. The extra information was a pleasant surprise for the client.

During the final presentation, Shawn was able to share the insights found within the data, and showed key stakeholders across the client and ministry the speed at which data could be explored and reported within Tableau. They were interested with exploring other applications of the software across other departments moving forward.
